Transitions Programme"The Transitions Programme showed me who to talk to about problems, not to judge people too quickly, and to be proud of who I am."
Transfer Work: Moving between primary and secondary school is a very important and potentially difficult time for young people and their families. We have established a successful programme to prepare young people for their transfer, working with those who have been identified as likely to struggle in making this transition. This may be due to displaying disruptive behaviour; being at risk of antisocial or offending behaviour; pressurised or inadequate domestic situations; suffering low self-esteem; lacking social skills or being the victims or perpetrators of bullying. Within this we run a 'Buddy' Project, initiated by the young people themselves, in which we train up and support Year 10 students to 'buddy' the year 7s. Whilst the younger 'buddies' are still at primary school contact is made with older 'buddies' at their destination school as penpals. The letters enable them to ask questions about the new school, build up a friendship and develop their literacy. "I know now not to worry about bullies because we've got our buddies to go to for help."
We have also produced a DVD of the voices of young people telling us their experiences, fears and concerns about the move up to secondary education.
Ongoing Support:Once in secondary school, support continues through lunchtime outreach, informal conversations, one-to-one support, small social skills groups and in the Personal & Social Education classes.Ready to Go: | |
