moving up to secondary school can be a difficult time for young people

I now hope that I’ll succeed and do well at school. I used not to feel that way but now I do.

Some young people struggle to make a positive transfer to secondary school at age 11, or to engage fully with education once there. The Transitions Programme works with year 6 children to prepare them for the move up and continues to offer support in year 7 and beyond, increasing self-esteem, confidence, skills and aspirations. We do this through:

  • the Transfer programme – preparing year 6 children for changing schools
  • using our resource Ready to Go to prepare for moving up
  • linking children with secondary school buddies
  • ongoing support, one-to-one and in groups, during and after school.

In 2010-11:

  • 84 children transferred successfully to secondary schools
  • 121 young people benefited from ongoing support
  • 51 young people gained confidence through residential activities.
