Still in school, thanks to youth worker and music

< Back to listing

Tom had multiple difficulties and had been excluded from school a number of times. Romsey Mill’s Youth Worker Jon spent time one-to-one with Tom.

Jon said, ‘Tom’s great love is music and he is talented in this: he is teaching himself to play piano, guitar and drums. During one session he tried to teach me the drums and was a very patient teacher despite my lack of talent!’

Jon saw that Tom’s musical abilities could be developed and encouraged him to join a weekly music project. Tom went on to win competitions, to gain greater control of his life and begin to settle in school.

His teacher said, ‘If Tom had not had Jon guiding him through some difficult times and providing opportunities to gain new perspectives, I doubt he would still be in school.’
