Creative Kickstart at Christmas

A lady who learnt new creative skills on a Romsey Mill course is putting them to good use!

Each year, Romsey Mill runs courses to help parents learn new skills and grow in confidence and resilience. And one of the mums who attended a Romsey Mill creative sewing course a couple of years ago, has just set up her own sewing business!

Zoe, from Cambridge, was so inspired by the course, delivered by a volunteer from City Church in Cambridge, that she decided to take up sewing more seriously.

Last month, she set up a crowdfunding appeal on Kickstarter to get her business off the ground. Over 30 people pledged more than three times the amount that Zoe was looking for and now her business is up and running!

Zoe said: “I would never have dreamed that this was possible such a short time ago. I had such little confidence when I started the sewing course and struggled initially. However, I managed to persevere and loved what I was learning.”

Speaking of her decision to seek crowdfunding, Zoe said: “It was a bit scary, but the response has been amazing! My dream is now a reality. I am so excited and really looking forward to making my little business work and watching it grow! Given the season, I’ve decided to start by making Christmas decorations and stockings.”

Susan Condie, Romsey Mill’s Family Worker, said: “Zoe has been an inspiration. Her perseverance and dedication has been great to witness and shows what can be achieved when you have the desire, even when life is already busy with three young children.”

Susan added: “Through the courses we run, we aim to provide parents with new practical skills and knowledge, and more importantly, improved confidence and self-esteem. Committing to a course and taking an active part in it is a great booster and can lead to a whole new outlook and a desire to seek new ventures and challenges.”

"HOPE. Your gift, our presence."

Romsey Mill Christmas Appeal 2019

Nearly one in five young people disagree with the statement that life is ‘really worth living’.* For them hope is fragile.

Throughout the year, the team at Romsey Mill is present and alongside many disadvantaged and vulnerable young people, in places across Cambridge city, South Cambridgeshire and in Hampton, Peterborough.

Across all of Romsey Mill’s work, our presence with young people and families helps them to:

• Overcome isolation and challenge

• Develop relationships and skills

• Grow more resilient communities and

• Build hope for their future.
