A Life Changing Gift - Jack's Story

Our Christmas Appeal this year is focusing on the work of Aspire and its positive impact on the lives autistic young people and their families in Cambridgeshire.

Here is the difference that Aspire has made in one young man's life:

Jack is 26. He attended Aspire from when he was about 14 up until the age of 19. The group for him was life changing. In his words:

“Coming to the group was relaxing. I felt I could be more myself. The people there were all very similar and we understood what we were all going through.”

This for Jack was a big change after struggling to make friends in school and find the place where he felt he could belong.

Aspire, and Romsey Mill, made such a difference to Jack, that he wanted to give something back through volunteering. And now he volunteers a few hours a week in the Romsey Mill charity shop, working round his paid job at a national delivery company.

Jack is great dealing with the customers and loves being part of the team with Liz (our charity shop manager) and the other volunteers.

In fact, Jack is now mentoring a new volunteer who has been attending Aspire for the last 12 months.

Our Aspire team has provided regular support for this young person through the weekly Aspire group he attends, and has now arranged the space opportunity for him to volunteer with Jack in the shop. Jack has been training him in the different jobs in the shop, including using the till and pricing up stock, helping him to grow in confidence and learn new skills, including team working and communication, that are helpful for his life going forward.

For Jack, the responsibility of the mentoring another volunteer has been a great role and he sees this as part of how he can give back to Romsey Mill.

Jack enjoys “Returning the favour” through the Romsey Mill charity shop for the help and support he was given through Aspire.
