Romsey Mill Charity Shop

Romsey Mill Charity Shop is located at 176 Mill Road, Cambridge, CB1 3LP (opposite the Black Cat Cafe).

Our charity shop raises funds for Romsey Mill Centre and thrives with the help of committed and friendly volunteers, overseen by Liz Diamond. The shop aims to build community as an extension of Romsey Mill Centre and to serve the needs of volunteers and customers alike.

We provide low-cost clothing, toys, books, linen, kitchen items, electrical goods and lots of other household items. We are currently also selling 3-layer, adjustable and washable face coverings made by one of our shop volunteers with material donated by a Charity Shop supporter.

We welcome donations. Please ring first (07768 307674) if your donation is large as we have limited storage.

Dropping off donations
We accept donations during our opening times; however it is best to ring us first to check that we have sufficient space.

Tuesday-Friday 10.00am-4.00pm are the preferred times; we do accept them on Saturdays but we fill up very quickly. Please note that we are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

The best place to stop in the car to drop off donations is on Stockwell Street, which can be accessed by turning down Argyle Street and continuing onto Stockwell Street. If you pull in near the side of the shop and call us on 07768 307674, we will come out and help you take your donations to the shop. If you would like to arrange an alternative time to donate to our shop please contact Liz on 07768 307674.

Electrical items that still work. We have a volunteer that PAT tests all electrical goods that are donated to us to ensure that they are safe to sell but we do not have any facility to fix broken appliances.

We also welcome any financial donations you may want to make.

Please avoid bringing us any very large items and unfortunately the size of our shop does not allow for furniture donations.

Charity Shops are not permitted to sell any safety equipment.

If in doubt please do phone the shop to ask about any donations you want to give.

All unsellable items of clothing and shoes are sent to a rag company. If you have clothes or shoes you identify as not fit to sell, please bag them up separately and label ‘rag’ or ask for a ‘rag bag’ in our shop and we will be happy to recycle these for you.

We sometimes have vacancies for more volunteers to join our team, if you are interested in meeting new people, gaining retail experience and supporting Romsey Mill, please get in touch with the Shop Development Worker Liz Diamond on 07768 307674 or pop into the shop and pick up a volunteer application form.

A volunteer’s experience
C was encouraged to try volunteering in the Charity Shop 2 years ago. Nervous and unsure he tried an hour a week despite facing challenging mental health issues; severe anxiety and limitations in his capacity to concentrate. Now, 2 years later, he gives 12 hours of his time per week, happily undertaking anything asked of him. He is responsible for receiving and carrying donations for customers, ensuring that the shop is COVID safe by welcoming the correct number of customers in at any one time, supporting other volunteers in how to use the til and generally being a lovely team member. His sense of humour is fantastic, and he shows enormous gratitude and happiness at being part of the shop team. He recently took up the responsibility of overseeing the rag collection from our lock up and communicating with the company that undertakes this. We are so grateful and proud to have Chris as part of the community of the shop and are so impressed at how he has risen to every challenge we have gently presented to him to help his development.
