News and events News It's snack time Romsey Mill’s Pre-school runs from 9am to 12pm each weekday during school terms. Pre-school Coordinator, Sylvia Briscoe, describes daily snack time with the children at pre-school. We try to promote healthy eating by offering the children healthy food and drink options. The children can choose between milk and water to drink, and fruit, vegetables and low sugar foods, such as rice cakes, breadsticks and cereals. Snack time provides the children with opportunities to learn and practice some great life skills, including: The importance of sitting while eating Pouring liquids Skilfully eating with cutlery Drinking from an open cup Preparing and cutting fruit Making choices Engaging with their peers Serving their peers All children must remain seated throughout snack time, learning the importance of sitting while eating and drinking. Not only does this avoid any choking hazards, it also provides quality time for the children to engage together. Adults join in the snack activity engaging in good conversation, whilst modelling good table manners. Snack time also provides opportunities for the children to be able to make good choices, which is a skill that will be useful for life. The children learn to pour their own drinks and drink from an open cup. They are also encouraged to help to prepare the fruit, using special child-friendly knives, and then share the prepared fruit with their friends.
